Denver city, popularly known as Mile High city is the largest and the capital of Colorado. Denver is situated on the plains, east of the foothills of the Rockies. The popu lation of Denver as of 2003 was five hundred and fifty seven thousand. The city has been honored by having a few Naval Ships named after it. Denver was established as a city in 1861. Denver was prosperous in the late 19th century because of it's gold and silver mines. The Winter Olympics in 1976 were to be hosted in Denver but due to in-house politics this was not possible and the games were moved to Austria. The city was the unfortunate location for the Columbine High School Massacre in 1999.
