The Colorado Rockies are a Major League Baseball team based in Denver, Colorado. The team was established in 1993 and joined the National League as an expansion franchise along with the Florida Marlins. The franchise is one of five teams in the West Division of the National League. The Rockies play at Coors Field in Denver and wear uniforms of white, purple, black and silver. The team first pick in the expansion draft was Pitcher David Nied from the Atlanta Braves organization. Nied pitched 4 seasons for the Rockies. In 1995, the Rockies moved into a new stadium, Coors Field, where they have played their home games ever since. The same year the Rockies set a record for an expansion team by reaching the playoffs in their third season in the league. The franchise led the National League in home runs and batting average in 1995 and 1996. Four Rockies players each hot more than 30 home runs in those two seasons. In 1996 Castilla, Galarraga, and outfielder Ellis Burks became the first teammate trio since Hank Aaron, Darrell Evans, and Davey Johnson of the late 1973 Braves to hit at least 40 home runs in the same season.

In their first two seasons, the Rockies played to over 7.7 million fans at Mile High Stadium. Originally designed to accommodate forty-three thousand, they quickly redesigned the park to contain over fifty thousand, they immediately redesigned the park to accommodate over fifty thousand before its 1995 opening. The ‘mile high style’ broke new ground in 1999 when a record three-hundred three homes runs were launched at Coors Field that year and average score was 8-7. The ‘’Mile high style’’ of baseball courtesy of the thin air at Denver’s altitude; Scientific studies show a baseball hit four-hundred feet in New York sea level, will travel ten percent farther in Denver, or four-hundred forty feet. This makes hitting much easier, as the ball travels farther and pitching more difficult, as the reduced air resistance makes breaking balls less effective than at sea level. The Colorado Rockies have had its shares of well known and notable players over the years, includes Todd Helton, Andres Gallarraga, Ellis Burks, Larry Walker, Andy Ashby, Darrl Kile, Dante Bichete, Mike Hampton, Preston Wilson and Vinny Castilla.
