The city by the rivers has had a long story of "Red" baseball teams. The Cincinnati Reds are a Major League Baseball team who presently belongs to the Central Division of the National League. The franchise that has its home in Cincinnati, Ohio took birth in 1869 as first professional baseball club in the name of “the Cincinnati Red Stockings”. The original Red Legs were well-known as they voyage the Midwest defeating almost every team they came across. The recent National League Reds have earned their name as a successful team by winning NL pennants four times 1939, 1961, 1970, and 1972 and World Series titles in 1919, 1940, 1975, 1976, and 1990. By the late 1910s the Reds started coming out of the second division. Under the leadership of the new manager Pat Moran, the team finished 4th in1918 and won the World Series Championship in 1919 by defeating Chicago white sox. The 1919 hitting squad included stars such as Edd Roush and Heinie Groh and the pitching staff included Hod Eller and Harry "Slim" Sallee, a lefthander. The "Black Sox" disgrace put a black spot on the Reds first championship in 1920. The performance of the team again degraded and they finished in second division in most of 1920s and early 1930s. Eppa Rixey, Dolf Luque and Pete Donohue were pitching stars; the offense never quite lived up to the pitching.

In the 1930s the Reds regained the fame, chiefly because of a firm pitching staff built around Paul Derringer and converted third baseman Bucky Walters. Offensively, beanpole first baseman Frank McCormick speeded the attack. McCormick twice led the NL in hits. Cincinnati finished mostly in the second division, during the rest of the 1940s and the early 1950s.The "The Big Red Machine" was the name given to the team in 1970 under manager little known George "Sparky" Anderson when Reds boarded on a decade of brilliance. The Reds became the first NL team since the 1922 Giants to win back-to-back World Series titles, in 1975-1976. Cincinnati posted its best overall record in baseball in 1981.In 2003, the Great American Ball Park was inaugurated with high hopes for a team led by local favorites, including franchise outfielder Ken Griffey, Jr., shortstop Barry Larkin, reliever Danny Graves and first baseman Sean Casey. Though the attendance enhanced significantly with the new ballpark but the team kept loosing, and the father-son combo of manager Bob Boone and third baseman Aaron Boone was broken up as Bob was relieved and Aaron traded to the New York Yankees.
