The Pittsburgh Pirates are a Major League Baseball team, who currently belong to the Central Division of the National League. The franchise is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1876, Professional baseball was first introduced in Pittsburgh city as the Pittsburgh Alleghenies. The team joined American Association in 1882 and soon became part of National League in 1887. Famously recognized as the Innocents, they turned into Pirates after “pirating” second baseman Lou Bierbauer from Philadelphia (AA) following the Players' League revolt of 1890. The Pirates have rolled some of the finest and most exhilarating seasons in National League history. The Pirates continued to be a dominating team in 1910’s and won their first World Series title in 1909 after beating the Detroit Tigers in seven games. Honus Wagner was the foremost Pirate of the 20th century. The Hall of Fame shortstop was the best player in the NL for a number of years. Other ostentatious Pirates in the beginning of era were Fred Clarke (who also managed the team to four flags), Tommy Leach, Deacon Phillippe, Sam Leever, and Vic Willis.

The 1920s Pirates marked a vicious batting hit directed by Hall of Famers Pie Traynor, Kiki Cuyler, Max Carey, Paul Waner, and Lloyd Waner. The pirates registered the World Series Championship in their name after defeating senators in 1925. Though the team faced defeat in final days of the season in 1927 as well as 1938, but they guaranteed that the Pirates had abundance of Hall of Fame-caliber position players including the sharp-hitting combination of brothers Lloyd Waner and Paul Waner, along with shortstop Arky Vaughan till 1941. The 1940s and 1950s sustained the famine of winning seasons. In spite of the existence of true stars like Ralph Kiner and Roberto Clemente, the post-World War II years were not thriving for the Pirates.

Pirates bounced back to distinction once again in 1960 after beating Yankees in the World Series on Bill Mazersoki's spectacular home run. The 1970s were the most successful decade in team history. Six times the team finished first, three times second, and once third. In 1971 and 1979 the Pirates advanced to the World Series, conquering the Orioles on both events. Next was an era of turning down until the Pirates were considered as the most atrocious team in baseball during the mid-1980s. The Pirates won the first three division titles of the 1990s, but couldn’t advance to the World Series each time. Barry bonds and bobby bonds were the spirit of the team during that period. Bonds said goodbye to the team in 1993 and the rest of the decade was spent trying to catch up. Jason Kendall, Brian Giles, and Kevin Young were a few of the bright spots in the 1990s, but through 2003, the team had not posted a winning record in the post-Bonds era.
