The Philadelphia Phillies are a Major League Baseball team based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Phillies are one of five teams in the East Division of the National League. The Phillies play at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and wear uniforms of white and red. The team was established in 1883, the National League’s Philadelphia Phillies are the longest standing one-name, one location team in all professional American sports. The Phillies played their first game on May 1, 1883, losing to the Providence Grays 4-3. The franchise had a tough time in the first decade of 20th Century after the upstart American League signed away their three biggest stars, Delahanty, Elmer Flick and Nap Lajoie. All future Hall of Famers. Their rebound started when they signed a young Grover Cleveland Alexander. After two consecutive second place finishes, the Phillies collapsed into a dark and dismal period virtually unmatched in the game’s history.

The franchise finally emerged from the darkness after World War II, building a team around what the fans came to call the “Whiz Kids”; Richie Ashburn, Curt Simmons, Granny Hamner, Andy Seminick, Robin Roberts and Veterans Dick Sisler and Jim Konstanty. In 1970s the Phillies won three consecutive National East Titles (1976-77-78) with Steve Carlton the mainstay and Mike Schmidt the slugging star. The Phillies dynasty did not extend to the post-season as they lost all three National League Championship Series. In 1979 the Phillies brought in Pete Rose for the boost that would get them over the top. In 1980 with Rose’s leadership and fiery competitiveness led the Phillies to their first and to date only World Championship. Carlton was the pitching leader with another Cy Young year and Schmidt had one of his finest seasons as Most Valuable Player.

The Phillies won National League Championship Series over Houston and defeated the Kansas City in the World Series in Six games with Carlton winning two and Schmidt hitting a pair of home runs. Despite producing talent such as Scott Rolen, Jimmy Rollins, and Bobby Abreau, signing star slugger Jim Thome, and moving into a new ballpark in 2004, the Philadelphia Phillies has been away from post-season for more than ten years. On January 5, 2006, the Phillies signed ex-Seattle pitcher Ryan Franklin to a 1 year contract worth 2.6 million dollars. On January 26, they added veteran reliever Arthur Rhodes to the Bullpen in a trade with the Cleveland Indians, for outfielder Jason Michaels.
