The Baltimore Orioles are a Major League Baseball team based in Baltimore, Maryland. The Orioles are one of the five teams in the East Division of the American League. The franchise plays at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland and wears uniforms of white, orange and black. The Orioles started out as the St. Louis Browns and then the franchise moved to Baltimore at the end of the 1953 season and was renamed the Baltimore Orioles after the black and orange birds of that name. The new Orioles took about six years to become competitive: Stars such as Brooks Robinson, John Powell and Dave McNally were being developed by a strong farm system by the early 1960s. By 1966 Paul Richards with an emphasis on pitching and defense, and manager Hank together they transformed the team fro a last place into a World Series champion. The franchise went to win five of the first six American League East titles and the 1970 World Championship. They made it back to the World Series in 1979, but they lost to Pittsburgh in seven games.

The Orioles were back again in 1983 under new manager Joe Altobelli and defeated Philadelphia. Cal Ripken, Jr., the son of former Oriole player and manager Cal Ripken, Sr. joined the Orioles in 1981 and went on to become the face of the Oriole team until his retirement in 2001. Ripken played in every game from May 30, 1982 until September 20, 1998, breaking Lou Gehrig’s record by three full seasons. Ripken did set several records for offensive and defensive performances as a shortstop. The Orioles hit a downward spiral after the 1983 championship. The franchise and fans were rejuvenated by the opening of Oriole Park at Camden Yards in 1992. The Orioles won a wild-card berth in 1996 and the American League East in 1997. Since moving to Baltimore, the Orioles have had considerably more success than their St. Louis forefathers, winning eight division titles, six American League pennants and three World Championships. It was clear that major changes needed to be made within the Orioles following the disappointing 2005 season. Mike Flanagan became the sole GM of the Orioles. Jim Duquette was hired as Vice President of Baseball Operations. The Orioles allowed Rafael Palmeiro, Sammy Sosa and B.J. Surhoff to become free agents. The franchise also traded disgruntled reliever Steve Kline fro La Troy Hawkins, then traded for outfielder Corey Patterson, who brings speed and defense to the outfield and traded former closer Jorge Julio and John Maine for experience starter Kris Benson.
