The New York Mets are a Major League Baseball team based in Flushing, Queens, New York City, New York. The New York Mets franchise was established in 1962. The franchise is one of the five teams in the East Division of the National League. The Mets play at Shea Stadium in Flushing, New York and wear uniforms of white, blue and orange. The New York Mets began their on-field play in 1962, losing their first nine games en route to a 40-120 record. In 1969 the Mets shocked the baseball world by winning the National League pennant and went on to defeat the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles in the World Series. They were managed by baseball legend Gil Hodges; they were also helped by a Cy Young Award winning season by 25-game winner Seaver, who would become the franchise’s most successful player. The Mets story (rags-to-riches) was regarded as one of baseball history’s great turnarounds, giving hope to underdogs and also-rans everywhere. Overall, the New York Mets has won two World Series titles, four East Division titles, and four Wild card berths. In 1986 New York won 108 games on the way to second World Series championship.

The team’s powerful offense was led by Garry Carter, Keith Hernandez and Darryl Strawberry as New York met the Boston Red Sox in the World Series. The Mets were on strike away fro elimination in the tenth inning of game six, but crucial Boston errors gave the Mets the win and the series went to a seventh game, in which New York captured the Championship. The franchise won another Division title in 1988 and placed second in 1989 and 1990 before dropping to the bottom of Division from 1991 through 1993. The Mets began to improve in the mid-1990s, with stars such as catcher Mike Piazza, second baseman Edgardo Alfonzo and pitchers John Franco and Al Leiter. The Mets reached the World Series in 2000; they played a so called Subway Series against their cross town rivals New York Yankees.

The Mets lost 4 games to 1; they scored only three fewer runs than Yankees. Following the 2000 World Series, the Mets struggled as the result of poor player acquisitions by then GM Steve Phillips, who was fired during the 2003 season. After the 2004 season, the Mets named their former assistant general manager Omar Minaya as their general manager. The Mets showed improvement in 2005, Minaya took advantage of the Florida Marlins payroll-reduction effort. All-Star first baseman  Carlos Delgado and All-Star catcher Paul Lo Duca came to the Mets in exchange for prospects Mike Jacobs, Yumeiro Petit and Gaby Hernandez. Minaya also made major changes to the pitching staff, signing star Closer Wagner and brought in hard throwing reliever Jorge Julio and Duaner Sanchez.
