Miami, founded in 1870, is renowned as the only city in the United States to have been planned by a woman, Julia Tuttle, and has a population of three hundred and sixty thousand residents. The city is situated in the South Eastern part of the state of Florida, on Biscayne Bay. Miami is in the county seat of Miami Dade. Miami was established as a city  in 1896.
In honor of Atlanta, three United States naval ships have been named after the city. In North America, Miami has the largest concentration of Banks that make only foreign loans and deposits (Edge Act) local and international. Miami also leads the way  in the united States as the number one in biochemical technology. The cities port is the largest in terms of Cruise ships and a very important seaport for cargo. Miami is a major focal point for filmmaking, music and fashion.
One of the famous popular television programs in the 80s, Miami Vice, was shot in the city and depicted the city as the most glamorous tropical paradise in the United States. Miami has one of the busiest ports of entry and international Airport in the United States and has several local and international companies headquartered in the city, e.g. Cisco, Oracle, Microsoft, FedEx, Sony, SBC Communications, Burger King, Wachovia, Norwegian Cruise Line, American Airlines and Disney.
Tourism is a major industry for Miami as several tourists flock to enjoy the sandy beaches and beautiful hotels. Some of those hotels are; InterContinental Miami, Crowne Plaza Resort and Holiday Inn. The city also has some of the best restaurants in the world, e.g. Bice Ristorante, Bolero Restaurant, Capital Grille, Gaucho Room, Joseph's Brasserie, Macarena Restaurant, Pearl, Ristorante La Bussola, Tuscany Cafe and Baraboo. Despite all the glamour and blitz that goes with Miami, in the 2000 census it was noted as one of the poorest in the United States. Miami is a sporting city and has several professional franchises based in the city, they are; Florida Marlins (Major League Baseball), Miami Heat (National Basketball Association), Florida Panthers (National Hockey League) and Miami Dolphins (National Football League).
