The Florida Marlins are a Major League Baseball team based in the Miami, Florida metropolitan area, and the franchise plays their home games in the suburb of Miami Gardens. The franchise is one of five teams in the East Division of the National League. The Marlins play at Pro Player Stadium in Miami, Florida and wear uniforms of aqua and white. The Marlins have been highly successful on the field since their inception, winning two World Series in 1997 and one 2003. Much of the success the team has was under Jack McKeon who led the Marlins to three winning seasons in a row. In 1997, the Florida Marlins led by new manager Jim Leyland won the wild card, finishing 92-70. Talented young stars and starters Louis Castillo and Edgar Renteria were one of the best double play combos in the League.

The Marlins swept the Giants 3-0 in the National League Division Series, and then went on to beat the Braves 4-2 in the National League Championship Series. In the 1997 World Series, Florida Marlins went on to face the Cleveland Indians and won in seven games. With an amazing extra-inning single by shortstop Edgar Renteria off of Cleveland pitcher Charles Nagy, this barely cleared his glove, scoring Craig Counsell to win game. Livan Hernandez was named the MVP. Wayne Huizenga claimed massive financial losses after the World Series and dismantled the team by trading off most of the club’s most talented players. Moises Alou was traded to the Houston Astros, Bobby Bonilla was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Kevin Brown was traded to the San Diego Padres. The financial losses would later prove to be mostly false as Huizenga reported team and stadium earnings separately.

The Marlins record slumped to 54-108 the following season, making them the first club ever to win a World Series and then lose more than 100 games during the following season. Overall the Marlins have won two World Series titles, two National League Pennants and two Wild card berths. In the 2005 off-season the Marlins signed Al Leiter and Carlos Delgado. Delgado’s contract was the biggest in the franchise history at $52 million over 4 years, with an option for a fifth year. However, at the All-Star break they were 44-42, and the National League was unusually competitive. The Marlins led the National wild-card race as late as September 13, but they then lost 12 of their next 14 games. On November 22, 2005, after failed to get a stadium deal in the city of Miami, it was announced that the team had the permission of major League Baseball to explore relocation as an option if a retractable-roof stadium is not reached in South Florida.
