The Cleveland Indians are a major League Baseball team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Indians are one of the five teams in the Central Division of the American League. The Franchise plays at Jacobs Field in Cleveland, Ohio and wear uniforms of white, red and black. The Indians was a charted member of the American League, inning its first home game 4-3 over Milwaukee on April 29, 1901. The India first star was Napoleon Lajoie one of the greatest hitters in history. Lajoie came to the Indians in 1902 from Philadelphia, and although he hit a robust .368, it representing a fifty-four point drop in his batting average from the previous season, when he hit an American League record .422. Many notable players have played for the Indians, including Stan Coveleski, Bob Feller, Nap Lajoie, Bob Lemon, Satchel Paige, Gaylord Perry, Frank Robinson, Tris Speaker, and Cy Young. During the 1990s Cleveland won five consecutive division titles (1995-1999).However, the club lost the World titles twice in 1995 to the Atlanta Braves and 1999 to the Florida Marlins. In 1997 the team again topped the division.

The Indians was led by catcher Sandy Aloma, jr., shortstop Omar Vizquel and outfielders David Justice and Manny Ramirez. The Cleveland Indians has won two World Series titles, six Central Division titles and five AL Pennants. In 2001 offseason, Mark Shapiro became General Manager. In 2002, Shapiro traded fan favorite pitching ace Bartolo Colon for then-unknowns Brandon Phillips, Cliff Lee and Grady Sizemore. He also acquired Travis Hafner in a trade with the Texas Rangers involving Ryan Drese and picked up Coco Crisp from the St. Louis Cardinals for aging starter Chuck Finley. In the mid-June of 2005 the Indians began a 9-game winning streak, going over .500 for good. However, the season came to a heartbreaking end as the Indians went on to lose six of their last seven games, five of them by one run, and missed the playoffs by only two games. Coco Crisp along with David Risk and Josh Bard to the Red Sox for reliever Guillermo Mota, third base prospect Andy Marte, catching prospect Kelly Shoppach, a player to be named later and cash. Arthur Rhodes traded to the Phillies for outfielder Jason Michaels.
