At the end of the twentieth century the city was at the middle of the dot com boom/rise. San Francisco was established as a city in 1850. San Francisco is an extremely important economic center for the state of California. The cities port caters to shipping lines from all over the world and is a top destination for visitors. Thirty percent of the Worlds Biotechnology labor force and three hundred and sixty biotech firms are all based in the Bay area. One of San Francisco's' leading industries is Tourism. The figures speak for themselves, seventeen million people toured the city in 2000 and spent close to seven and a half billion dollars, aiding about eighty two thousand jobs. The Federal Reserve Bank, the United States Mint, and more than sixty other foreign banks are all based in the city San Francisco, making the city the financial and banking core of the west. This are a few of the local and international firms that have their headquarters in San Francisco; CNET, The Gap, Levi Strauss & Co., SEGA of America, Wells Fargo, Pacific Gas & Electric and Viz Communications.
