The Arizona Diamondbacks along with Tampa Bay Devil Rays joined the National League as an expansion team in 1998. The Diamondbacks are member of the West Division of the National League and are currently sited in Phoenix, Arizona. They are popularly referred as the D-Backs or the Snakes. Arizona struggled a lot to secure a Major League club for the state, and all credit goes to Jerry Colangelo owner of successful NBA franchise “Phoenix Suns” who amassed an ownership group to pertain for a Baseball team. Diamondbacks received three division championships (1999, 2001, & 2002) and one World Series in their five years of survival. Just in their second season in 1999, the Snakes won 100 games and won the National League West division. In 2001, after beating the cardinals in NLDS and Atlanta Braves in NLCS reached the World Series and the Diamondbacks became the youngest expansion club to win a world series Championship by defeating reigning champs, the New York Yankees. During this time team was headed by two most significant baseball pitchers Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling. On November 7, 2001 around 30,000 fans rejoiced the Diamondbacks winning carnival at Bank One Ballpark. This was the first major professional sports championship for the team and the first for state of Arizona too.

The team’s presentation started deteriorating in 2004; they dropped to 51-111 record, the worst in Major League Baseball that year. Moreover colangelo resigned from the post of Managing General partner because of argument over the financial health and direction of the Diamondbacks. The performance didn’t improve in 2005 even, under the leadership of Melvin D-backs concluded the 2005 season with an unsatisfactory record of 77 wins and 85 losses. In order to get better the team has appointed 35 year old Josh Byrnes as General Manager. The Diamondbacks attained righthanded pitcher Jeff Bajenaru from the Chicago White Sox and traded infielder Alex Cintron. Tony clark will continue with the team this year too.
