The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are a Major League Baseball team based in St. Petersburg, Florida. The Devil Rays were established in 1998 and they are in the Eastern Division of the American League. The franchise plays at Tropicana Field in Saint Petersburg, Florida. The team’s name was selected by Saint Petersburg residents for the devil ray, also called devilfish, a large fish that inhabits the waters bordering Florida. The team jerseys colors are green, yellow, purple, blue and black. The franchise joined the major league on March 9, 1995, along with Arizona Diamondbacks. Major League Baseball awarded the Tampa Bay expansion team franchise to businessman Vince Naimoli. Chuck LaMar was hired as general manager of the Devil Rays. The Devil Rays began play in 1998 under the direction of former Florida Marlins pitching coach Larry Rothschild. The club signed Cuban national team pitcher Rolando Arrojo. The team finished last in its division in its first season. Before the 1999 season the Devil Rays signed star Player Jose Canseco, but they continued to struggle and finished the year last in the AL East again.

Expectations were low for the team entering the 2004 season; the franchise went on to surprise everyone by compiling a 42-41 record (.506) in their first 83 games. One of their best players has been recent Hall of Fame inductee Wade Boggs, who became the first MLB player to have his 3000th hit be a home run while with the Devil Rays. After setbacks in the 2005 season that left them again last place in the division, Chuck LaMar was fired; he had been the team’s general manager since the team’s first season, and most of the front office. Matt Silverman was named as team president, and Andrew Friedman took the role of Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations. Gerry Hunsicker, former General Manager of the Houston Astros, has taken over as Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations. The Devil Rays may have prepare or set the tone for future contention with the play of young stars and up and coming players such as outfielders Carl Crawford, Jonny Gomes, Infielder Jorge Cantu and pitcher Scott Kazmir. The next manager has tools to work with provided the new ownership group spends the money for the team to contend. In the late 2005 Joe Maddon was announced as the new manager for the Devil Rays.
