The team was established as part of American Association in 1882 where they enjoyed a four dynasty under owner Chris Von der Ahe. Initially they were known as the Brown Stockings and shortened to the browns, joined the National League in 1892 following the bankruptcy of the American Association. The Cardinals built themselves into a winner during the mid-1920s led by second baseman/manager Rogers Hornsby.
